Broken Bay Tribe

This portrait of an unidentified man from the Broken Bay district north of Sydney, is one of many portraits of Aboriginal people made by German-born Charles Rodius
between May and August 1834. They were perhaps done
in preparation for a series of six lithographic portraits he published in October of that year. Rodius, clearly a trained
artist, was transported to NSW for theft in 1829, but soon established himself as one of the colony’s leading portrait artists.
