Join author Peter Barton, archaeologist Adam Ford, the State Library of NSW and Inside History on Thursday 3 July 2014 for a riveting talk about the true story of the Battle of Fromelles.

Historian and documentary filmmaker Peter Barton will reveal the groundbreaking research on Fromelles undertaken for his book The Lost Legions of Fromelles. The deadliest episode of Australian military history, Fromelles claimed more than 5000 Australian lives alone in just two days.

Having spent 10 years researching the bloody battle, Peter was the first historian to gain access to Germany’s war archives. Compellingly, his research uncovered that the conventional view of military history – that British and Australian troops lacked courage and that the Allied strategy was betrayed to the enemy side by spies – is not the whole story.

Acclaimed archaeologist and writer Adam Ford, presenter of the much-loved ABC TV show Who’s Been Sleeping In My House?will also share his insights into the process of uncovering the past. Adam has been involved in many archaeological expeditions around the world ranging from medieval castles, prehistoric desert camps, Cold War rocket bases, and the excavation  of the site of Ned Kelly’s last stand (click here to read more).

Elise Edmonds will also join the panel. Elise is a curator in the Research & Discovery branch at the State Library of New South Wales and is currently curating the upcoming exhibition, Life Interrupted: Personal Diaries from World War I, which surveys the Library’s collection of World War One diaries and correspondence.
